Welcome to Shilo Quarter Horses

Our philosophy

Our philosophy is simple: Positive Partnership: Making a positive impact one horse at a time.

My greatest passion, and many times my greatest weakness, has always been horses.  I can’t help myself. I find myself drawn to them in wonder and fascination.  What is inside such a powerful and intelligent creature that it will willingly let me sit on his back and carry me off?  I am astonished that he will give all his physical effort and intelligence to any given task no matter how hard it may be, just because I ask him for his help. And, I am always amazed that he will take me home and feel as good about himself as I do with a job well done.  I have spent thousands of hours on more horses than I could count.  I know the joy and the pain, the glory and the dust of every moment that come from being partners with a horse. I have spent a lifetime trying to understand what makes a horse and rider come together and even more important what keeps them together.

I’d like to think that my passion for horses is a positive thing.  That it has drove me to learn and understand some of this wonderful thing we call horsemanship, and with that passionate knowledge, to share it with others and make it an even more positive thing.  I’ve learned that good horses always bring good people together.  This is why we started Shiloh Quarter Horses. We believe we can make a positive impact on the horse world one horse at a time.

My passionate knowledge has bought me to 3 main conclusions about horsemanship.

A horse needs 3 things: A good dam, a good sire, and good bit of time.

As a breeder I’ve always felt very responsible for the start I give a colt.  I want him to be able to carry himself on four strong legs for the rest of his life.  I know that I am responsible for his start, his foundation both mentally and physically, with what I bring together for nature to create.  And as a trainer I know I am always responsible for how he reacts to me no matter what his age.  I always have to stop and remember that a horse is always a horse and he doesn’t carry a watch.

A man needs three things:  knowledge, understanding and compassion

I’ve never yet met a true horseman that said he knew enough.  I need to always be open-minded and gain more knowledge, but what knowledge I do have needs to be applied and that is understanding. Compassion is what makes it a relationship, real to the one you are relating with.

Horsemanship is never easy.

Horses and men are very different creatures. The fact that we can come together at all is what makes horsemanship so special. I must remember that the burden of responsibility rest on me. Every moment I am around him, he is reacting to me.  I must remember that great effort is required for every good endeavor.

In 25 years of horsemanship experience, I’ve found these simple principles to be the foundation to having that special partnership with horses.   We choose the name "Shiloh" because the word means peace and tranquility. There are enough things in this world that cause us strife and struggle; horses are not made to be one of them.  We believe that we can make a positive impact on the horse world one horse at a time, through our stallion, our colts, and our training
